Definition
A young male dancer in performances. Gemblak refers to a young male dancer who traditionally accompanied a warok in Reog Ponorogo performances, taking the role of the jathil, a horse-riding warrior, and wearing feminine-style attire such as a skirt, chest covering, and earrings as part of the symbolic presentation. The relationship between warok and gemblak was understood as a father–child spiritual bond, in which the warok practiced strict ascetic discipline, including abstaining from sexual relations, and the gemblak assisted the warok in daily needs as an expression of devotion rather than sexual orientation. Starting in the 1980s, the role of gemblak as jathil dancer was gradually replaced by women, marking a significant change in the Reog Ponorogo tradition.
